How we apprehend cultists – Laspotech Rector

Mr. Babatunde Iginla, an engineer is the Rector of the Lagos state polytechnic. Though he became the Rector in 2007, he has been in the school system since 1977.

In an interview with Daily Sun recently, the teacher, author and public analyst gave an insight into his background. He also spoke on the institution’s major problem, how they apprehend cultists, the scrapping of HND among other issues.

Background

I was born on August 19, 1955 into the family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Olufemi Gbodamosi Iginla at Isale Agoro, Epe. I attended Children Home School, and Christ’s High School both at Ibadan. I later proceeded to Remo Secondary School, Sagamu, in 1971 for my Higher School Certificate. I worked for nine months while awaiting my results as a pay clerk at the pay office of the Federal Ministry of Finance at Mosaic House, Tinubu, and Lagos.

I gained admission into the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos where I read Chemistry in 1973. I was awarded the Lagos State Undergraduate Scholarship, graduated with a Second Class Upper and awarded the National Bursary of the Federal Government for being the best student in the Faculty of Science.

I joined the services of LASPOTECH in 1977 and was granted study leave to study for a Masters of Philosophy degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the then University of Ife, Ile Ife before returning back to the school in 1983.

Processing results

Before the era of computerization of results, we manually combined our results but when we joined the group, we started using results combination software.
We started with a software called Optima 2000 for the Part Time, and then in 2003, we started using Laurel 2003. The softwares later developed a fault which we could not rectify after much attempt to set things right. Results started to pile up, so we had to revert to the old form of combining results. This process was very slow because we had dropped it a long time ago.

We now have a new result processing software called the regarding robot which we have redeployed for the 2007/2008 results. Now all first semester 2007/2008 full time results have been considered and approved by the academic board. The regrading robot is much more modern and faster we plan to work it up with our portal in a short while.

Harassment in school

I can assure you that all cases of harassment happen out of the school and by non-students or students who have been rusticated from LASPOTECH or other polytechnics and universities in the country. Whatever happens outside the school premise becomes the responsibility of the Nigeria police.

Cult activities

Since the mid 80’s we have had cult activities in all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The best we have been able to do is to minimize their activities because we cannot completely eradicate it. Right now, there are no laws that deal with cultists. They are still handled under the criminal code. They can be apprehended, taken to the police station and bailed out the same day if there are no cases of murder or manslaughter. Cases of cult activities and the likes within our campuses have been seriously minimized. We recently dismissed 3 highly placed (Notorious) cult members. A case that involved the Lagos State Government.

How we apprehend cultists

We have reports given to us by our intelligent officers. When their identities are known, we let them know that we know them and place them on probation. The kind of probation that allows them in the school until their names are mentioned on any criminal act. We dismiss them after they are apprehended and given fair hearing.

Also, we are in close contact with the community where our campuses are located. We also get reports from students and victims. We have a complaint box, the lasposianscomplain@yahoo.com where students can make their complaints. There is also a telephone number 08029069988, where students can send SMS only to. We have a weekly newsflash giving weekly information of the happenings in the campuses.

We have a LASPOTECH community relations committee. We also have plans to build police stations in all areas where these campuses are located.
For example, the Lambo village situated here in Ikorodu has become a hiding place for criminals.

The students retreat that was held

It is a wrong impression to think the students retreat was done to buy them over. There has never been an instance where the management of the institution interfered with the affairs of the student union and the fact that we don’t get involved in the electoral process is a prove that we were not buying them over.
The retreat was to expose them to what they will be facing in the course of carrying out their activities especially in the modern society. Dr Olu Bankole Gbangbobo a psychologist from the University of Lagos was there with many other people who can impact positively in them.

This included past leaders of the polytechnic and other polytechnics to talk about their experiences. I want to say here that, the retreat which took 30hours was a success.

Scrapping of HND

The matter of HND has not being fully settled. The last decision was that there would no longer be HND and there has not been an enabling effect to it.
The COHEADS said there is no way we can put technological education to the background because it is this era of education that brought the world to where it is now.

You cannot put practical things away. After reading, you put things to practice. You cannot find two people doing the same thing the same way. Doing things practically leads you to other ways of doing that thing. It cannot be relegated. If it is scrapped, then it should be replaced with Bachelors of Technology. Our concern is that while attaining B.Tech, we do not loose sight of technological education. It will not be right calling it University of Technology or better still adopt the Kenya way by calling them Polytechnic University.

LASPOTECH, Omatek Partnership

We partnered with Omatek for several reasons, one is that we needed to open up other avenues for revenue generation for our LASPOTECH Consult. Omatek wanted us to be a distribution centre for Omatek products, which will earn us commission, so we said why not. Omatek is also a computer assemblage company and are involved in CAN, Computer For All Nigerians. We will be bringing in computers into the community and thereby promoting what we have in stock for the polytechnic in respect to information and communication technology.

The institution’s major problem

The major problem of this institution is funding and this affects all institutions of learning be it primary, secondary or even the nursery schools.

Part-time students who cannot go for service

That unfortunately is a recent development. At a recent meeting with the NYSC management, and other relevant bodies, this issue was raised that you will not be allowed to go for service if you do not possess a letter of admissions from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and you know that part time students do not have this.

Making the institution residential

We are presently on this. We have just advertised for expressions of company and about two companies showed interest at the beginning but the two has narrowed down to one and of course we cannot deal with one person so we are waiting for other companies to show interest. We have the intention of building hostels with all the modern facilities there.
