While female students of universities in
other countries are busy with their coursework, their
counterparts in Nigeria are busy joining female cults.
Some of these cults emulate their male counterparts such as
the “Black Axe”, "Vikings", "Eiye", “Pyrates” etc. On the
other hand, the female cults take up more feminine names as
the "Black Bras", "White Bras", the "Blue Angels", etc.
Eye witnesses report that while their male counterparts try
to prove their dominance by risking death in violent clashes
between rival university cults steeped in black magic, the
female cults indulge in all sorts of bizarre activities such
as - "sex parties, lesbianism, robbery, rape, extortion,
theft,” said a 24 year-old law student of Imo State
University, Owerri.
The origin of Nigeria’s student cults
started out as innocent organizations during the
anti-colonial campaign era. The “Pyrates” now known as
'The Nigeria Association Of Seadogs' (NAS) was founded
in 1954 at then University College, Ibadan, for political
discussion by Nobel Peace Award winner, Professor Wole
Soyinka. By the 1980s, the “Pyrates” became steeped in
violence and fought for supremacy on campuses with their
rivals from the "Buccaneers", which later took up the name
'Nigerian Association Of Sea lords', and “Black Axe”.
Violence took over the activities of the cults ever since.
Nigeria’s
modern “Campus Cults” are criminal gangs usually operating
in and around the country’s campuses often killing fellow
students. Politicians also use them as thugs and mercenaries
hired to carry out assassination of their opponents. "..When
someone is initiated, they are traditionally beaten to the
ground with their assailant hitting them below the head to
prevent noticeable bruises. They must then stand up and be
beaten to the ground over and over again. They take
concoctions and participate in rituals. Some of them die
during the initiations- ” said Mr Oka, a former member. The
concoctions are a mixture of drugs, alcohol and blood drawn
from animals.
Nigeria has more than 100 universities, which boast of more
than 30 different cult groups. Members of each group wear
distinctive bandanas, head wears, and use particular
handshakes to identify themselves. For instance those in the
“Black Axe”, wear black bandanas, the “Black Eyes” wear
yellow, the “Pyrates” favor blue and the “Mafia” choose red,
etc.
Female cults, which started much later has not yet taken
to the frenzy of violence and fight for supremacy on campus
that characterized their male counterparts. Rather they are
often associated with organized campus prostitutions. Their
members are easily identifiable by their flamboyant
lifestyles on campuses. "..You can see a non-working female
student driving a 'baby jeep' on campus, her parents won't
ask her how she got it.." said Bimbo, a 20 years old
female student or University of Lagos. Uche, a 2nd year
student of Uniport said in her first year she was once
invited by her room-mate to what her roommate described as
an 'off-campus party' but became curious when she told her
to wear something very tight and sexy inside She declined
the invitation. "The next day she came back with large sums
of money and lots of gifts", she added. She later learned
the party was actually a sex-party organized by a female
cult for some 'big boys' in town.
A former member of a popular female cult who spoke on the
condition of anonymity revealed that most 'big guys' and
politicians are behind the female cults. They get 'jobs'
from these guys. However, a source close to one of the cults
informed that the 'jobs' is prostitution ( Campus runs,
group sex, sex-parties, sex orgies) that come in various
names like 'house warming', 'house parties', 'pool-side
parties', 'conference' etc. While their male counterparts
hunt for macho and rich boys on campus for membership, their
female counterparts are on the look-out for young, innocent,
beautiful, and sexy girls for initiation. "..so what's
beauty got to do with being tough? So you guess what they
do". Hinted Chijioke, a third year student of University of
Benin. Recently too the female cults are largely responsible
for the surge in the number of homosexuals
(lesbians) on Nigerian campuses, as well as the increase in
dare-devil, female armed robberies.
What is surprising is that Nigeria, with it's teaming
population of people addicted to religion; churches and
mosques at every nuke and corner, appears helpless in the
face of the rising morale decadence amongst its youths. A
male student put it this way "...with the female cults
providing easy access to sex for the politicians and the
upper class, law enforcement agents are not in any hurry to
clamp down on them". Evil! Evil indeed in a culture that
prides on the sexual innocence of women.
